Champions League winning Chelsea midfielder will not be joining Besiktas

Chelsea defensive midfielder John Obi Mikel has been closely linked with Besiktas over the past few weeks however, BBC African football journalist Oluwashina Okeleji has confirmed that there is no truth to the transfer rumour.

Okeleji told Emre Sarigul: “There is no truth whatsoever to the Mikel link, there is nothing to the Besiktas story.”

The Express recently reported that Besiktas approached Chelsea over the possibility of Mikel joining the Super Lig champions over the summer.

Per the source, Chelsea would have accepted a £7.7 million bid for the Nigerian international midfielder.

Besiktas are in pursuit of a central midfielder this summer with Canadian international Atiba Hutchinson set to leave and Champions League football looming.

The 28-year-old made 19 Premier League starts and appeared in 33 total matches for the Blues last season, scoring one goal in the Champions League.

Mikel would have ended a 10-year spell at Stamford Bridge were he to move, during which he helped the team claim the Champions League, Europa League, two Premier League titles, four FA Cup titles and two League Cup titles.
