Liverpool will target defender following injury to England U21 international

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will make additional summer transfers to reinforce his defence following injury to Joe Gomez according to the Daily Mail.

The highly rated England U21 international has not played for the Reds since rupturing his cruciate ligament in a Euro 2017 qualification match in Kazakhstan last October.

Gomez had recovered and was working towards ensuring match fitness over the summer but has been forced to put a halt to his training  after picking up an Achilles problem.

Liverpool parted ways with Martin Skrtel over the summer and Mamadou Sakho is facing injury concerns as well which is giving Klopp a headache in defence.

The Reds are currently working on signing Leicester City left back Ben Chilwell and Udinese midfielder Piotr Zelinski but Klopp will have to search for another option as a result of the latest injury blow.

Gomez made seven starts for Liverpool in the 2015-16 season – five in the Premier League and two in the Europa League. He even made an assist in his debut, a 1-0 win over Stoke City in September.

Gomez was acquired for £3.5 million in a move from Charlton Athletic.
