Chelsea boss Antonio Conte on verge of completing third summer signing

After wrapping up deals for Michy Batshuayi and N’Golo Kante, Chelsea coach Antonio Conte is set to add a third new face to his squad this summer.

The former Italy coach took charge of pre-season training this week and oversaw his first game as Chelsea boss on Saturday, but he’s also had one eye on the transfer market.

With a desire to strengthen his squad ahead of his debut campaign in the Premier League, it appears as though there will be change in the goalkeeping ranks.

While Thibaut Courtois is expected to stay at Stamford Bridge and remain Conte’s first-choice shot-stopper, Diego Lopez could now arrive from AC Milan, according to GazzaMercato.

As noted in the report, a deal was completed in a meeting last week, with a view of the Spaniard moving to west London after being displaced as the number one choice at the San Siro.

The former Real Madrid star suffered a dip in form at the start of last season and picked up an injury, paving the way for teenager Gianluigi Donnarumma to establish himself as the first choice at Milan.

In turn, it threw Lopez’s future with the Rossoneri into doubt, and with Gabriel returning from Napoli along with Alessandro Plizzari being promoted to the senior squad, there is seemingly no room for the veteran at Milanello moving forward.

However, he will get another big move despite the fact that he turns 35 later this year, although he will have to wait for his move to Chelsea to be confirmed as the Premier League club are currently in the process of sending Asmir Begovic to Everton, as noted by GazzaMercato.

Provided that Lopez is content with initially arriving as back-up to provide competition for Courtois, it would be a wise move from Conte given the experience and quality that the Spanish ace would bring with him.
