Liverpool have edged ahead of Tottenham in the race to sign Newcastle United’s Georginio Wijnaldum according to the Mirror newspaper.
The report states that the €25 million valuation set by Newcastle has deterred interest from Tottenham who feel the asking price is too high for someone who cost £14.5m a year ago.
The Mirror goes onto say that Liverpool are preparing to table a bid for the 25-year-old this week and that the player wants out of Newcastle following last season’s relegation.
Wijnaldum joined the Magpies from PSV Eindhoven last season for £14.5million and Newcastle are looking to to make a significant profit on their investment.
Rafa Benitez’s side have made it clear that they want at least £25 million for the 25-year-old.
Wijnaldum was one of Newcastle’s few bright sparks last season scored 11 goals. The Echo also states that 25-year-old has attracted the attention of several Premier League sides including Tottenham.
