Man Utd target reveals terms under which he would leave Southampton

Southampton defender Jose Fonte is being targeted by Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho according to the Express.

Per the source, Mourinho is keen on Fonte after being impressed with his display at Euro 2016 for champions Portugal.

Fonte in on Mourinho’s shortlist but the Portuguese manager revealed he is happy at Southampton and would only leave for a side that plays Champions League football.

The 32-year-old defender told Portuguese publication O Jogo: “Southampton are a good club in England, where I’ve been treated very well, we have been successful.

“However, in football you never know what can happen and it’s obvious that if a world class club who play in the Champions League show up, it’s tempting for me. But I state it again, I’m happy where I am.”

United may be a giant of world football but do not have Champions League football and therefore may not be able to temp Fonte to make the move.

The experienced defender does have another two-years remaining on his current contract and the Saints want to keep him at the club but he has had offers this summer.

Fonte revealed that he cannot disclose details of the offers but that he will consider the bids made before making his final decision.

He added: “After a European success, interested clubs always show up and there are offers.

“Let’s wait for the next few weeks… There are several interested sides, but for this to materialise it, it’s something else.

“Then there are other details: you need to understand if the club wants to sell me, if they are available to let me go. Let’s see what happens.”

Fonte joined the Saints from Crystal Palace in 2010 and has gone onto score 15 times while providing nine assists in 267 appearances in all competitions.
