Possible Arsenal transfer branded “last resort” by club legend as Gunners close in on signing of 6ft 24-year-old

Arsenal legend Paul Merson is not impressed with his former club’s reported plans to sign Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi.

According to Sky Sports, Arsenal are closing in on a deal to bring the 24-year-old centre-back to North London.

But Sky pundit Merson, who won two league titles, three domestic cups and the 1994 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup with Arsenal, has questioned the deal.

“If they fancied Mustafi that much, why didn’t they buy him when the Euros had finished?” asks Merson. “It feels as if it is a bit of a last resort.”

Mustafi, who is 6ft tall, made 30 La Liga starts last season, before turning out twice for Germany at Euro 2016.
