Aston Villa set to complete signing of enigmatic English star after Serie A giants leave him out of squad

Aston Villa could be on the verge of completing their seventh summer signing after Ravel Morrison was left out of the Lazio squad for their opening game of the season.

The Serie A outfit get their campaign underway against Atalanta on Sunday night, but Morrison hasn’t travelled to Bergamo despite impressing in training ahead of the new year.

As reported by Football Italia, this has been put down to the fact that the Italian media expect the former Manchester United starlet to complete a move to Villa this week.

Further, it’s also claimed that the 23-year-old was seen at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport on Saturday night, thus leading to further speculation that he is returning to England to complete the transfer.

Morrison has struggled for first-team football since arriving in the Italian capital last year, and so a move this month would make sense for him.

In contrast, questions will be asked as to where he fits into Roberto Di Matteo’s side, as the Italian already boasts the likes of Jordan Ayew, Jack Grealish and Ross McCormack playing in behind a main striker.

However, there is no denying that Morrison certainly adds something different and a creative spark in the final third, something that Villa have been lacking and the fans would undoubtedly love to see some flair and excitement added to the team.

Before any such deal can be completed though, Di Matteo will have to be convinced that Morrison’s head is in the right place as he has a well-documented history of having disciplinary issues throughout his career thus far.

If that part of his game can be managed, then Villa could be on the verge of completing a very important signing, adding to arrivals of Pierluigi Gollini, Tommy Elphick, James Chester, Mile Jedinak, Aaron Tshibola and Ross McCormack.
