Arsene Wenger insists Arsenal still in race to sign Germany international

Arsenal have not given up hopes of signing the Germany international defender Shkodran Mustafi according to SkySports.

The Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is still confident that his side will secure the versatile defender before the end of the summer transfer window.

“Mustafi? We hope it will be done  He is one of a number of players we are looking at. Negotiations are ongoing,” Wenger was quoted as saying by SkySports.

Arsenal are suffering with an injury crisis in defence following a long-term injury to Per Mertersacker and with Gabriel Paulista also ruled out for six weeks.

Wenger also has his eye on Turkish international defender Omer Toprak according to the Daily Star preferring him over a move for Fenerbahce defender Simon Kjaer – who the Gunners have also been linked with.

Toprak is available for less than Mustafi and has years of Bundesliga and Champions League experience behind him.

Wenger did have Koscielny back over the weekend for Arsenal’s clash against Premier League champions but is still without Per Mertesacker and Gabriel due to injuries.
