Chelsea prepare last ditch £25m bid as Antonio Conte looks to solve worrying defensive issue

Chelsea are reportedly preparing a final offer for Juventus star defender Giorgio Chiellini, according to The Sun.

Per-the-source, Conte is keen to sign another defender in order to ease the workload on Gary Cahill and club captain John Terry.

Conte worked alongside Chiellini while at Juve, and over the summer at Euro 2016 while manager of Italy. The Italian tactician wants to link up again and make Chiellini a key member of his defence, with the defensive stalwart proving his class over a number of years for both club and country.

The Sun goes on to state that the Blues have also been in talks with Napoli’s Senegal international centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, but that is a transfer saga that has been on-going for months and few will be confident that a deal will be struck as the deadline fast approaches.

Koulibaly started for the Serie A giants in their season opener against Pescara on Sunday night, and it appears as though he’ll be a key member of their squad again this year.

Meanwhile, Chelsea recorded their second victory of the season over the weekend when they sealed a 2-1 win over Watford. Although, the Blues have now conceded in both their Premier League encounters so far this season.

Chiellini, who started 21 Serie A matches last term, has represented Italy 88 times, and would undoubtedly be a welcome addition to the team. However,  it’s highly unlikely that the Serie A champions will be interested in talking about a transfer.

Chelsea take on Bristol City in the League Cup second round on Tuesday and host Burnley at Stamford Bridge this weekend.
