Southampton defender joining Man Utd could spark exodus from club

Manchester United are targeting a move for Southampton defender Jose Fonte according to the Express.

Fonte has made no secret of the respect he has for the Red Devils and revealed that he would be flattered by interest.

The Portuguese defender said: “If the interest is there it is a reason to be flattered to be associated with a club like Manchester United.

“I will not deny that Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world and that makes me happy to be associated with it.”

Despite strengthening defensively with the transfer of Eric Bailly at the start of the summer, Mourinho is keen on adding more depth to his back line.

Fonte appears to be keen on working with United boss Jose Mourinho but his arrival as the Red Devils fifth signing this summer could spark an exodus in defence.

Phil Jones who is linked with a move to Stoke could be on his way out as could Argentinian defender Marcos Rojo with Bailly, Blind and Smalling ahead in the pecking order.

Fonte has just one year left on his contract and despite being offered a new deal, he has yet to agree on personal terms which in turn could pave the way for a cut-price move to Old Trafford.
