Burton Albion vs Liverpool: Match preview, team news and predicted line-ups

Liverpool take on Burton Albion in the second round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, with Jurgen Klopp hoping for a reaction from his players.

The German tactician was expected to make several changes to the line-up regardless of the weekend’s result, but the defeat to Burnley would certainly have left him disappointed.

In turn, he’ll put out a strong team as this will be a good chance to get back to winning ways, and as shown last year, he enjoys a cup run and will want to replicate that same success this season.

While Simon Mignolet will likely continue in goal, this could be a chance to give Joel Matip his competitive debut while keeping a few familiar faces around him with Alberto Moreno looking for a confidence-boost.

Emre Can has been tipped to feature as he continues his comeback from a back injury and could take his place in the midfield alongside Kevin Stewart and Marko Grujic, while Lazar Markovic and Divock Origi could get some playing time with Adam Lallana completing the attacking trident.

It remains to be seen whether or not Klopp goes with this exact line-up, but it would certainly make sense as he looks to rotate his squad, keep his starters fresh and hand minutes out to those pushing for a spot in the starting line-up moving forward.

While they’ll look to bounce back from the poor result at Turf Moor, Burton host them having picked up just two wins in their last five outings, while they needed extra-time to see off Bury in the last round.

It’s far too early in the season for there to be any panic at Liverpool with the deadline fast approaching, but Klopp will want to see a professional and no-nonsense performance from his players to get through unscathed.

Predicted Liverpool XI: Mignolet, Moreno, Matip, Lovren, Clyne, Can, Stewart, Grujic, Lallana, Origi, Markovic

Predicted Burton XI: McLaughlin; Turner, McFadzean, Flanagan; Akins, Irvine, Palmer, Naylor, Dyer; Beavon, O’Grady
