Liverpool will be out to continue their impressive form when they travel to Derby County in the 3rd round of the Capital One Cup tonight, as they take on Nigel Pearson’s Championship side.
The Reds, 4-3 winners over Arsenal in their opening game, went down 2-0 to the Clarets despite having 80% of possession and over 20 shots on goal.
The Liverpool defence came in for criticism for the errors that led to the goals however it was an ineffective forward line containing Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho which shouldered much of the responsibility.
The trio, along with Sadio Mane, are likely to miss out on Tuesday with Divock Origi and Danny Ings set to be given their chance up-front.
Joel Matip, Marko Grujic and Emre Can are likely to make their first starts of the season with Jurgen Klopp telling reporters that the changes will be kept to a minimum.
“We will make changes but not big changes, it is not really likely we change seven or eight positions”
That should mean another run out for a defence that looked shaky when pressed on Saturday.
The meeting will be the first ever competitive meeting between the team although the presence of former Liverpool star Nigel Clough should add an air of familiarity to proceedings.
Clough led his side to the Championship last season after securing promotion from League One and is relishing the opportunity to face his former side.
“This is a brilliant week for the club, not a crucial week.
“Usually big games like this come later in the season and there’s a lot riding on them. That’s not the case.
“It’s 10 years since we played Manchester United in the FA Cup so these games don’t come around very often for us. Ask our supporters. Never in their wildest dreams did they believe they’d be playing teams like this, never mind who we now play in the league week in, week out”
Clough will likely be without defender John Mousinho while fellow defender John Brayford is cup tied. Tom Flanagan (thigh) could feature while Kyle McFadzean should also be fit after a head injury.
It could prove a sticky encounter for the Reds, with the 9/1 on the Burton home win attracting plenty of attention from punters.
