Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been told by the board that he must offload some of his high earning stars in order to be able to sign Southampton target Jose Fonte according to the Mirror.

Per the source, United want Mourinho to trim his squad and reduce the ever growing wage bill if he is to sign Fonte who could be available for £12 million.

Mourinho is however, facing a problem as the likes of Marcos Rojo and Bastian Schweinsteiger who are both surplus to requirements and on lucrative contracts are proving difficult to sell on.

Schweinsteiger will not leave the Red Devils despite being told to find a new club by Mourinho according to Sun.

The report claims that the former Germany international wants to see out the rest of his two-year contract – which the Daily Star claim could be worth as much as £17 million over the next two-seasons for a player that will play in the reserves.

Southampton meanwhile are determined to keep Fonte at the club and are willing to offer a two-year contract extension according to the Express.
