Arsenal transfer news: Gunners target Newcastle defender who was relegated last season

Arsenal have been linked with yet another defender as their search for a centre-back goes on.

According to a report in the Daily Star, the Gunners are after Newcastle United’s DR Congo international defender Chancel Mbemba.

Per-the-source, Arsenal are desperate to bolster their defensive options with the summer transfer window closing next week.

The north London based club are currently facing a defensive crisis following injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been forced to field the young defender Rob Holding in the opening two games of the Premier league season.

Wenger has however found it difficult to bring in new faces to strengthen the defence.

Mbemba, who has 25 caps for DR Congo to his name was part of the Newcastle squad which was relegated from the Premier League last season. The 22-year-old has played in three Championship games for Rafa Benitez’ side this season.

Arsenal take on Watford FC this weekend in the Premier League.
