Barcelona star set to renew contract after rival joins Premier League giants

Barcelona will reportedly offer Marc-Andre ter Stegen a contract renewal, with official confirmation of the new agreement expected in the coming days.

The German shot-stopper is now regarded as the first-choice goalkeeper at the club, with Claudio Bravo closing in on a move to join Manchester City after being spotted at Manchester Airport on Tuesday.

According to Sport, Barca have wasted little time in trying to tie down Ter Stegen’s long-term future, and expect a new deal to be wrapped up and signed this week.

While the report adds that Jasper Cillessen is expected to arrive from Ajax before the deadline, he will be considered a back-up option this season and will have to try and displace his German rival.

It’s claimed that a deal running until 2021 could be put on the table, but the pressure will now certainly be on the 24-year-old to consistently deliver with the club parting ways with Bravo.

It leaves him with the chance to establish himself as the number one between the posts for the Catalan giants, and Luis Enrique will hope to see the level of form that proves he deserves a new deal.

Barca have been busy in the transfer market, with Lucas Digne, Samuel Umtiti and Andre Gomes also arriving at the club this summer.

In turn, Enrique and his players will be full of confidence that they can replicate last season’s success while also looking to reclaim their crown in Europe as the silverware continues to arrive at the Nou Camp.

Ter Stegen will now play a pivotal part in continuing that tradition, and after making just seven La Liga appearances last year, he’ll have a much bigger role to look forward to.
