David Silva became the fifth all-time top scorer for Spain after scoring his 28th goal in the 8-0 win over Liechtenstein in their opening World Cup 2018 qualification game.

Silva overtook Fernando Morientes who had 27 goals after scoring a brace tonight in Spain’s convincing victory over the European minnows.

The City midfielder has 28 goals in 105 international caps for the European giants since making his debut.

The experienced attacking midfielder still has a long way to go if he is to catch the leading pack. David Villa is the all time top scorer for Spain after hitting the back of the net 59 times in 97 appearances.

Raul Gonzalez is second with 44 goals in 102 games, followed by Fernando Torres who has 38 goals in 110 matches and then Fernando Hierro who has found the back of the net 29 times in 89 games.

Silva could overtake Hierro and move into fourth place in the all time scorer charts with another two goals for the national team.
