David Luiz position confirmed as Chelsea boss Antonio Conte addresses speculation regarding versatile Brazilian’s role

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has revealed how he plans to use new signing David Luiz.

Brazilian international Luiz returned to Stamford Bridge this summer, after spending the past two years in Paris with PSG.

Luiz is generally considered to be a centre-back, although he has previously operated in midfield too.

Although he is clearly a fine defender on his day, Luiz’s lack of focus and his willingness to take risks can sometimes backfire.

Therefore, there had been suggestions that Conte – a coach who is serious about defending – may opt to play Luiz further forward.

However, that does not appear to be the case.

Speaking to the official Chelsea website, Conte said: “‘I think David Luiz is a centre-back, he’s played a lot of games in that position.

“I know sometimes he’s played as a central midfielder but in my mind the idea is to utilise him in the right position which, for me, is centre-back. He’s played with Chelsea previously and he will bring a good personality.”

In a separate ChelseaFC.com article, Luiz gave his thoughts about the possibility of playing as part of a three-man central defensive unit.

The 29-year-old said: “I started playing three at the back with Vitoria in Brazil, but it doesn’t matter where, I want to help and when I am in the team I am there to try to help.

“The coach is an amazing coach, he understands a lot of tactical things and I know he chooses every match the best line up, so if he needs to play three, four or two, it doesn’t matter, I am there if he wants me to play. In different positions I am available.”

Luiz’s second Chelsea debut could come on Sunday when the Blues travel to Swansea City with the aim of maintaining their 100% start in the Premier League.
