The former European cup winners will make history on Sunday when they meet in the Championship later this afternoon.
Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest have endured lean days since their success in the late 70s and early 80s; and on the 11th September they will become the first former European Champions to meet in the 2nd tier of the English league.
Four points separates the teams in the table with Villa 17th in the table on 5 points and Forest sitting 12th on 9. Villa have not yet won since they beat Rotherham on the 13th August, drawing with Huddersfield and Derby and losing to Bristol City.
Forest meanwhile have climbed up the table on the back of two successive wins over Wigan and Leeds United. The club have registered 7 goals in the two games with three of those going to Oliver Burke.
Sadly for Forest fans, Burke moved to Germany to Red Bull Leipzig and won’t be involved.
In addition to missing Burke, Forest will also be without Britt Assombalonga and Nicklas Bendtner. Assombalonga is struggling with a hamstring injury while recent signing Bendtner is not yet match-fit. Chris Cohen will also be missing for the visitors.
Villa, unbeaten in their last 8 games against Forest, will have debuts to new signings Jonathan Kodjia and Albert Adomah; however fellow capture Mile Jedinak, signed from Crystal Palace, is a doubt after getting injured on international duty with Australia.
Big things are expected of Kodjia. The forward arrived from Bristol at the end of August for a reported £11 million having scored 19 goals for the Robins last season. His performance last season were key to Bristol City staying up and he will hope to fire Villa back to the Premier League.
If they can avoid defeat, Villa would make it four league games without defeat at Villa Park for the first time since February.
Predictably, Aston Villa are the favourites and can be backed at a price of around 5/6, while Nottingham Forest look like plenty of value at a jaw dropping 4/1.
We should be in for a cracker.
