Chelsea keen to continue £50m defensive rebuild in January, 24-year-old targeted

Chelsea are reportedly set to continue their defensive rebuild in January.

The Stamford Bridge club spent £50m, per the Daily Star, to bring in David Luiz and Marcos Alonso on Deadline Day this summer, but more spending is now being mooted by Calciomercato, who claim that Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij will be targeted when the transfer reopens in the New Year.

According to Calciomercato, Chelsea have tried previously to sign De Vrij, who is said to be happy at current club Lazio.

De Vrij is currently in his third season as a Lazio player, having moved to Rome from Feyenoord back in 2014.

To date, the 24-year-old has made just 35 Serie A appearances, but he has featured in every minute of their current campaign.

De Vrij’s first goal for Lazio earned his side a 1-1 draw with Chievo last weekend.

It is at the other end of the pitch where the 30-time Holland international is most effective, however.

So far this season, De Vrij has made eight interceptions and been dribbled past just three times in three whole league matches.
