Arsenal still targeting 222-goal ace as Gunners line up £40m for familiar face

Speculation has linked Karim Benzema with Arsenal for a long time now, and it’s claimed that the Gunners are still interested in signing the Real Madrid ace.

The French international has repeatedly been linked with a move to north London in recent transfer windows, and now Merca Futbol in Spain have suggested that a £40m offer is possible.

However, it’s worth noting that Real’s transfer embargo could make any sale difficult, given that the La Liga giants wouldn’t be able to sign a replacement in the next two windows and in turn that could force them to keep hold of Benzema for the time being.

Nevertheless, having opted to keep Alvaro Morata at the club this summer, they may feel as though they have enough, and time will tell as to whether or not Benzema still has a long-term future at the club.

The 28-year-old has scored 222 goals in his professional career to date in all competitions during spells in France and Spain, and he’ll hope to continue to add to that tally wherever it takes him in the coming years.

Meanwhile, Arsenal swooped for Lucas Perez from Deportivo La Coruna this past summer, although many supporters could still argue that they need further reinforcements in that department.

The likes of Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck have been unable to either stay fit or deliver goals consistently, and it has been argued for many years that the Gunners need a talismanic striker to take them to the next level.

Benzema has always emerged as one of their top targets, but up to this point a transfer has never materialised. Whether or not it could be any different this time round remains to be seen, but evidently those rumours will continue to circulate.
