Man United star Wayne Rooney likened to an out of date ‘Mercedes Benz’ by former England international

The former Liverpool striker and football pundit Stan Collymore has likened Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney to an old Mercedes Benz and has urged Jose Mourinho to offload the experinced striker.

Writing in his Mirror column, Collymore said that Rooney has too many miles on the clock and no longer has the ability to be a star in the Premier League. The former England international went onto say that it is the time is right to offload Rooney to the MLS on a free-transfer.

“If Wayne Rooney was a car, he’d be an eight- or nine-year old Mercedes Benz,” Collymore stated in the Mirror.

“In 2016, it still drives well enough. But, the trouble is it has 110,000 miles on the clock too, and is no longer up to the standards of a Bluetooth-compatible, all-singing, all-dancing 65 plate.”

“But the time does look right for Jose Mourinho not just to park him on the Manchester United bench for a few weeks but to drive him out of Old Trafford altogether and stick him on a container ship bound for the USA.”

The 30-year-old forward has been given a rough ride by United fans this season although to be fair it is partly his doing.

Rooney has been far from his best and United boss Jose Mourinho gave him a chance to regain some confidence against League One opposition in the EFL Cup.

The Red Devils ended up beating Northampton 3-1 however, Rooney was yet again disappointing and even missed an clear scoring opportunity early on. Manchester United host Leicester City at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday.
