Man United set for ‘major midfield shake up’ in 2017 with one key man in and two out-of-favour stars out

Man United boss Jose Mourinho will likely be looking to continue to strengthen his squad in the transfer windows next year, and his midfield is reportedly next on the agenda.

The Portuguese tactician brought in Paul Pogba this past summer, significantly increasing the level of quality in the squad in that department with the Frenchman’s arrival.

However, his partner in that two-man midfield has changed this season, with the likes of Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera all making their case to get into the side.

One man that has struggled is Morgan Schneiderlin, and along with Bastian Schweinsteiger who has been frozen out of the first team by Mourinho, Bleacher Report have noted that both men could be on their way out of Old Trafford next year.

Further, the Red Devils could target another former starlet, with Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater high on their transfer wish-list.

The 26-year-old has come a long way since joining the Foxes, playing a pivotal role in their march to the Premier League title last season.

Having joined the United academy when he was nine, Drinkwater will arguably feel as though there is unfinished business in Manchester after failing to make a senior appearance for the club and could be tempted by the idea of a return.

Much of the dealings mentioned in the report is mere speculation at this point, but it builds on rumours that have surfaced in recent weeks in terms of Drinkwater.

It certainly doesn’t look as though either Schneiderlin or Schweinsteiger have a future with United, and so perhaps there is truth in the claims and Drinkwater will be targeted and Leicester’s resolve will be tested.
