Liverpool’s run for the title could be blown by defensive weakness

Liverpool have had a brilliant start to the season, and are flying high after successive wins over Leicester, Chelsea, Derby and Hull. They have an easy set of fixtures coming up, with winnable games against Swansea, West Brom, Crystal Palace and Watford coming up in the league.

The Reds should cruise to 12 points from those four games if they continue playing as they have been. But will their defence be strong enough to support a run like that?

Jurgen Klopp’s side have yet to keep a clean sheet in the league, and have conceded nine goals in six games. New signings like Loris Karius, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan are still bedding in at the club, and they do not have a top quality specialist defensive midfielder. James Milner is coping as a left back, but he’s limited in the position.

So far Liverpool have been able to outscore the teams they’ve faced in the league, but eventually their defence will be tested. Its ability to withstand pressure will be what decided whether the title is headed to Anfield this season.
