Manchester United might have thought that by holding on to their star goalkeeper David de Gea through the summer of 2015, when Real Madrid made offer after offer and were only thwarted in their attempts to sign the keeper by a broken fax machine, they had ensured they would have hold of him for a few years yet. This was reinforced further when the Spanish goalkeeper signed a new contract not long after that.
De Gea has gone from strength to strength since then, and has been United’s best player for the last few seasons. Unfortunately for United, things aren’t going quite as well for Real Madrid’s goalkeepers.
Both Kiko Casilla and Keylor Navas have left a lot to be desired in recent weeks, and Navas’ error against Eibar on Sunday cost Real Madrid points at a vital moment in the title race.
United should enjoy De Gea’s performances this season and prepare for another big battle to hold onto him this summer.
