Chelsea stalwart shown up by statistic which shows he’s having Premier League season to forget

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has been a consistent presence in the side for a number of years now, but he’s been guilty of making big mistakes so far this season.

The 30-year-old is in fact the only player in the Premier League to have made two mistakes which have directly led to a goal, as per Squawka.

While the England international’s first mistake came against Swansea City when he was caught out by Leroy Fer, he was again dispossessed by Alexis Sanchez against Arsenal which ultimately led to the Gunners scoring.

Only 15 players have made errors which have resulted in the opposition scoring so far this year, with five of those goalkeepers, but none have made more than one mistake aside from Cahill.

Usually such a reliable presence in the Chelsea backline, it hasn’t been the ideal start for the former Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers man, and he will hope to avoid allowing further errors to creep into his game moving forward.

Chelsea have been shaky defensively across the board so far this season having conceded nine goals in just seven games which is the second-worst defensive record of the top 10 teams in the Premier League table currently.

With John Terry sidelined with an ankle injury since the clash with Swansea City last month, the likes of Cahill and David Luiz have been put under the spotlight to add defensive solidity to Antonio Conte’s team.

The Italian tactician will undoubtedly be desperately frustrated about individual errors, but he’ll hope that they can now build on their win and clean sheet against Hull City prior to the international break and continue to pick up positive results in the weeks ahead.
