Man United star Ander Herrera caught short in Spain after surprising phone call

Ander Herrera could be set to win his first cap for Spain this week after receiving a call-up to the senior squad.

Herrera has been capped at U20, U21 and U23 level, but despite being 27-year-old is yet to make an appearance for the Spain senior team.

The former Athletic Bilbao midfielder would have been forgiven for assuming the ship had already sailed on the international stage. For instance, the Spain midfield in recent years has never been so difficult to break into but his performances for Manchester United this season warrant selection.

This could also be Julien Lopetegui making a mark as new Spain manager, who will be pleased to hear about Herrera’s dedication after receiving a call-up following Saul’s withdrawal through injury.

According to El Confidencial, Herrera was caught by surprise when the phone rang. The midfielder, currently forcing his way into the Manchester United starting eleven, was on holiday with his family in Madrid.

The report claims that Herrera cut the holiday short there and then but realised he didn’t have any gear with him, and had to buy himself a pair of boots for training the next day.

Apparently no-one in the Spain squad has the same size feet, or else they’re bullies and don’t believe in helping out a squad rookie.

D’oh!

I wonder what his boot of preference was in some downtown stall. The classic Diadora boot, modelled by Roy Keane back in the day?
