Manchester United playmaker looks to have avoided the chop and is in-line for a bumper new deal, according to The Mirror.
Per-the-source, Mata has emerged as a key name in Jose Mourinho’s squad this season. Interestingly, the Portuguese tactician sold Mata to United while he was the manager of Chelsea.
The Spain international has just under a year and a half remaining on his current deal with the Red Devils.
This is in stark contrast to the reports in the Daily Mail over the summer, which linked Mata with a move away from Old Trafford following the appointment of Mourinho.
Mata has provided one assist and scored two goals in nine appearances for Manchester United in all competitions this season.
The Red Devils take on their rivals Liverpool on October 17 as they look to return to winning ways. United were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw with Stoke City last week and find themselves five points behind the league leaders Manchester City.
