Confirmed England XI vs Slovenia: Lingard keeps his place as Henderson set for captain’s role

England interim boss Gareth Southgate has named his starting Xi to face Slovenia in their World Cup qualifying clash in Ljubljana on Tuesday night.

Southgate confirmed this week that captain Wayne Rooney would be on the bench for the encounter, with the armband passing on to Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson.

Meanwhile, Jesse Lingard keeps his place in the starting line-up after making his international debut against Malta on Saturday and will support Dele Alli and Theo Walcott in an attacking trident behind Daniel Sturridge.

Henderson will be partnered by Eric Dier as they hope to dominant the game and dictate the tempo in midfield, while Danny Rose returns to the line-up after Ryan Bertrand picked up a hamstring strain at the weekend.

England will be hoping to make it three wins in three in qualifying to start, while Southgate will be out to take maximum points in his first game in charge away from home.

It’s been a positive start in general by the 46-year-old, but results will ultimately dictate whether or not he is able to land the job on a permanent basis after being put in temporary charge following Sam Allardyce’s exit last month.
