England are in action on a busy Tuesday of European football world cup qualifiers however much of the focus will be on Wayne Rooney rather than the starting XI Gareth Southgate puts out.
The out-of-form Manchester United star has reportedly being dropped from the side for the clash with Slovenia after another inept performance against Malta.
The Three Lions moved onto six points in the group with a 2-0 win over the Islanders however Rooney and co failed to inspire; although Jordan Henderson, named man of the match, and Daniel Sturridge, scorer of the opening goal, both came away with their heads held high.
The pair are likely to start again on Tuesday with Tottenham star Eric Dier set to come in for Rooney.
England are two points ahead of their hosts and they could move five points clear if Scotland fail to get a result against Slovakia in the night’s other key game.
Despite recent results, England are still seen as favourites and can be backed at 4/6 to bag the vital away win, which move Gareth Southgate one win closer to taking the England managerial job full time.
Slovenia can be backed at value looking 5/1 to take the home win and stall the momentum of the Three Lions.
The final game in Group F sees Lithuania, unbeaten after two games following draws with Slovenia and Scotland take on winless Malta. A win could see them move second in the group should other results go their way.
Northern Ireland meanwhile are third in their group on 4 points following a 4-0 win over San Marino at the weekend. They face leaders Germany on Tuesday. The Germans hammered the Czech Republic 3-0 to move to 6 points level with surprise side Azerbaijan.
This looks a difficult task for Michael O’Neils’s side and their odds of 33/1 reflect opinions about their chances. The current World Cup Champions are an almost unbackable price of 1/9 to take maximum points.
Azerbaijan beat San Marino 1-0 in their opening game and they followed up that success with a 1-0 win over Norway on Saturday to make it two clean sheets in a row. The result leaves Norway without a win along with San Marino and the Czech Republic.
Norway will hope to get off the market on Tuesday as they face off against the minnows while Azerbaijan face the Czechs in Prague.
The final games of the night see Poland at home to Armenia, Kazakhstan against Romania and Denmark hosting Montenegro.
It should prove to be an intruiging night as England look to move on without rooney in the starting line up.
