Winston Reid put in a titanic defensive performance for West Ham yesterday, and reinforced how much of a great signing he would be for Chelsea.
The New Zealander was a rock in his team’s defence as they withstood everything their opposition threw at them. He finished the game with 3 tackles, 3 interceptions and 15 clearances. he battled with Christian Benteke all game and came off better in every department, showing real guile to control the powerful Belgian.
Chelsea’s defenders were playing in a similar formation to West Ham this weekend, and Gary Cahill is the obvious weak link in a 3 alongside David Luiz and Cesar Azpilicueta. If Chelsea could swing a deal for Reid in January, they would have a much more agile player capable of pressing higher in his back line, as well as being more than capable of dealing with aerial balls as he showed today.
West Ham tied the defender to a 5 year deal last summer to fend off Premier Leauge interest, but that shouldn’t be a problem if the Blues are really keen to land their man.
