Boxing Day be unlucky for some as the Championship enters round 13. 10 teams are in action including leaders Norwich and second place, Newcastle.
Norwich, fresh from a 3-1 win over basement side Rotherham, travel to face Fulham. Alex Neil’s side have won four of their last five games and will head into the midweek clash, one point clear of their rivals.
The Canaries will be looking to consolidate at the top of the division as they face a Fulham side that won for the first time since August when they beat Barnsley 4-2 at the weekend. The win moved them into the top 10 and they will be keen to push on so Neil’s side could be in for a tricky encounter in West London.
Rafa Benitez and his side will be looking for an easier three points as they travel to Yorkshire to face Barnsley. Barnsley were defeated 4-2 at home by Fulham last week, the defeat was their fourth in five games and it doesn’t appear to be a reprieve on the horizon.
Up next for the Tykes is a Newcastle side chasing a fourth win on the trot and in red hot form.
The Magpies proved too strong for Brentford last time out running out 3-1 winners. The win made it 8 goals in their last 3 games with Dwight Gayle, now the Championship’s leading scorer with 9 goals, scoring five of them.
Gayle will fancy his chances against a Barnsley defence that has conceded on average 2 goals a game in their last 5 games as the Toon look like serious contenders for the Championship title this season and will look to hang onto the coat tails of Norwich.
With third place Huddersfield not in action until Wednesday, the pair can open up a small gap at the top. Brighton meanwhile could climb into third place if they overcome the challenge of Wolves at the Amex.
Chris Hughton’s side are fourth in the table and on a good run of form with 3 wins and 2 draws in their last five.
Bristol City and Birmingham are also in action with the Robins traveling to face QPR and the Blues at home to Rotherham.
Elsewhere on the night, Reading host Villa in the 8pm kick off, as Stev Bruce continues to reignite and build Villa’s promotion ambitions.
Struggling Wigan travel to Leeds, where Garry Monk will be looking to bounce back from Saturday’s defeat to Derby, while Ipswich are at home to Burton, Brentford take on Derby and Blackburn face Nottingham Forest.
