England defender made to look ordinary by Champions League thrasing

Barcelona made light work of Manchester City in the Champions League last night, brushing aside the team that has impressed the rest of the Premier League so much with ease.

Lionel Messi returned to the Barcelona side and celebrated with a hatrick, the first of which was the vital go-ahead goal that effectively decided the result.

The Argentine burst into the box and put the ball on his left foot, and ever single outfield Manchester City player seemed to freeze, leaving the world’s best player one on one with a desperate, sprawling Claudio Bravo.

Where was John Stones? The former Everton player, who has looked excellent for Pep so far, had a dire game as his side were comfortably beaten. It was a sharp reminder that the English centre back is still very raw, and will require a lot of coaching from Guardiola before he can compete with players like Umtiti and Pique, who were utterly imperious in their control of the game for their team.
