Manchester United wished Wayne Rooney a happy 31st birthday on the official club twitter account today, sharing a picture of the team captain alongside a birthday message but the fans did not seem best pleased.
The experienced forward had got his week off to a great start after featuring in the 4-1 win over Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday but he ended the week losing 4-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge – not the best way to get birthday celebrations underway.
Many fans using the social media platform laid into the England international in the replies to the birthday greetings but there were still some messages of support.
We took a look at some of the fans reactions below.
@ManUtd don't give him a cake, we want him to leave

Below the belt!
@ManUtd make sure he doesn't go granny shagging, you don't want more embarrassment after getting beat 4-0 at the bridge

Not everyone singled out Rooney and there were some fans that criticised Mourinho.
@ManUtd enough is enough #MourinhoOut

And some fans stuck up for Rooney. In fact despite all the stick he has been facing recently there were more than a few tweets wishing Rooney a happy birthday and respecting the service he has provided the club.
@ManUtd happy birthday @WayneRooney #Legend people slating him are stupid he's done so much for our club he will always be a United legend

There was even a call for Zlatan Ibrahomovic to be dropped after apparently laughing after the Chelsea defeat and being replaced by Rooney.
@ManUtd Drop Ibra play him. Atleast he doesn't laugh after losing 4-0
