Arsene Wenger has revealed how many points he believes it will take to win the Premier League title this season.
Wenger is quoted by Metro in saying: “The first trend is set: three teams on 20 points. The championship will be decided by 82-86 points.”
Arsenal have not won the title in over a decade, but their manager appears to have a clear idea of how they can be triumphant this term.
At the same stage last season Manchester City led the way with 21 points, Leicester trailed behind with 16. By the time May came around, City had fallen off and finished fourth with 66 points. Leicester, on the other hand, lifted the trophy with 81 points.
History suggests that it is dangerous to make such projections. The unpredictable nature of the Premier League is what makes it so entertaining, but also so unforgiving for managers. Wenger should know that better than anybody after 20 years in England.
Early signs suggest that this season’s title race will be one to remember. Just one point separates the top five, who are all looking capable of mounting a real challenge for the trophy this campaign. Only time will tell if Wenger’s prediction will prove to be accurate.
