Jose Mourinho tells Man Utd captain he must leave club for regular first-team football

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has told team captain Wayne Rooney that he must leave the club if he wants regular first-team football according to the Sun.

Per the source, Mourinho informed the England international that he cannot guarantee him first-team football.

Mourinho reportedly does not want to sell Rooney but did not want to keep him in the dark about his role in the team either.

Rooney has not started in the Red Devils last four league games including the 4-0 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge over the weekend with the official line from the club regarding his absence being that he suffered a muscle injury.

The 31-year-old still has another two-seasons remaining on his current contract – including the current season – and is paid £250,000 per-week which would be difficult for clubs to match.

Rooney has scored 249 goals for United which is just three short of the all time club record set by Sir Bobby Charlton 40 years ago.
