The big game tonight sees old rivals Manchester City andManchester United do battle in the latest installment of the Manchester Derby.
City won when the sides met in September, the 2-1 win at Old Trafford a tale of two halves. The blue side of Manchester dominated proceedings in the opening 45 only to be pegged back in the second half.
Since that encounter both teams have suffered a dip in form which has hindered their chances of Premier League silverware this season. Manchester City are without a win in five games in all competitions while United have won just four of their last 10 games, which is surprising considering the quality throughout both these sides.
Jose Mourinho’s side lost 4-0 on his return to Chelsea on Sunday and the Portuguese tactician will be keen to get a big result for his side and give confidence a much needed boost.
Mourinho is expected to make some changes to the side that lost at Stamford Bridge with Marcos Rojo, Juan Mata, Michael Carrick, Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial and Ashley Young all pushing for starts.
All will be looking to make a positive impression with places in the starting XI certainly up for grabs at the moment.
Morgan Schneiderlin could also get a rare chance to shine while Eric Bailly misses out after suffering an injury on Sunday.
City meanwhile will be without midfielder Kevin de Bruyne due to calf strain while Pablo Zabaleta is also out.
Skipper Vincent Kompany, who made his first league start since April on Saturday, is available and could start while academy products Aleix Garcia, Angelino, Brahim Diaz, Tosin Adarabioyo, Angus Gunn and Pablo Maffeo will hope to be involved.
Speaking ahead of the game City boss Pep Guardiola hailed the quality of the United team, telling reporters “They are a strong team with quality. They are six points behind – just two games. Derbies are always special. We are going to try to play seriously and try to win the game.”
Manchester City have won 3 and drawn 1 of their last 6 League cup meetings with United.
The home side are favourites to progress, with Man Utd available to back at 8/5, while Manchester City look a touch more value at around 2/1.
It should make for a pulsating atamosphere at the Theatre of Dreams as once again fans of these two mighty Manchester teams look for bragging rights.
A loss for either would certainly heap pressure on their managers, of which so much is expected, so it really is all to play for tonight.
