Steve Bruce will make his return to Birmingham this weekend when he takes his Aston Villa side to St. Andrews for the Midlands derby.
The man who twice guided the Blues to promotion to the Premier League took over at the Villains earlier this month making an immediate impact with a first win in 11 games.
In all Bruce has picked up seven points from his first three games to take Villa up to 16th in the table. The club now have 17 points, just 6 less than their weekend hosts and depending on results they could climb into the top half of the table with another win this Sunday.
Bruce stoked the fires ahead of the fixture by claiming that Villa were the biggest club he had managed.
“There is plenty of potential here, there are so many good players, but it’s a big club and the expectation has to be dealt with.” Bruce told the Birmingham Mail.
“It’s a tough league, fiercely competitive and physically there is nothing between championship and premier league. The games come thick and fast, there is no gulf in class, it’s an honest and genuine league and anyone can beat anyone. This would be my biggest promotion if I can get it back up and running, this is the biggest challenge and club I have tackled in 20 years of management.”
The two sides last met in the league cup in 2015 when Villa won 1-0 while in league meetings Villa have won two and drawn two of their last four clashes.
Jonathan Grounds will be missing for the Blues through suspension while Jonathan Kodjia will hope to add to his tally of three goals in this last three appearances.
Birmingham are unbeaten in their last five league games at home, scoring 12 goals in that period.
Villa have improved somewhat under the leadership of Steve Bruce, and the away side are generally favourites across the board at 6/4 to take all three points.
However, as we have seen previously, anything can happen in these types of gasmes and there’ll surely be a fair few who are taking a punt on the Birmingham City home win, which looks a tasty price of just over 2/1.
Whatever the outcome however, make sure you strap yourself in as we take in the the first ‘Championship’ derby between these two sides in the second tier of English football.
There’s plenty at stake, including bragging rights so make sure you don’t miss a kick.
This one kicks off at 12 noon today.
