The assist that equalled Giggs’ record was one that Ronaldo may feel embarrassed to accept. He merely provided a headed flick-on for Gareth Bale, who fired a sensational volley into the top corner from the edge of the box.
Ronaldo and Giggs played together at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, and will both go down in history as two of the greatest players of their generation. They now share a record that reflects their quality on the field.
There is a pretty good chance that Ronaldo could retire with the most goals and the most assists in Champions League history – what a feat that would be.
