Arsenal are interested in signing Atletico Madrid centre-back Jose Giminez, according to The Sun.

The Sun report that Arsene Wenger is interested in bolstering his defensive ranks with the 21-year-old, who could cost up to £54 million.

However, the Gunners could face stern competition for the Uruguayan’s signature. The Mirror have reported that Manchester United are also interested in Giminez as Jose Mourinho looks to plug the holes in his faltering defence. The Mirror believe that Atletico will not sell in the January transfer window, but United are optimistic that a deal could happen next summer.

Arsenal already signed German international Shkodran Mustafi in the summer to partner Laurent Koscielny. Sky Sports reported at the time that the fee for Mustafi could eventually rise to £35 million. Wenger has shown that he is prepared to spend big for defensive reinforcements, so he may not baulk at parting with £54 million for Giminez.

The youngster has shown real promise for Atletico, and could provide over a decade of service for whoever his next club may be. Giminez’s situation is certainly one to keep an eye on as he enters the final two years of his contract.
