West Ham United are reportedly preparing to swoop for Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas in the event that Dimitri Payet leaves the club.
The French international left the door open for an exit from the Hammers this week, as noted by Sky Sports, and in turn it has reportedly forced the club to consider their options just in case their star man does opt to leave.
According to The Sun, that search hasn’t taken them far with Fabregas emerging on their radar given the Chelsea midfielder’s problems so far this season.
Having struggled to make an impression on Antonio Conte, which in turn has led to him being left on the bench for the majority of the campaign thus far, it has unsurprisingly led to speculation over his future.
The report claims that given his desire to remain in London, it could be a perfect match with West Ham looking for a world-class and high-profile name to step in and replace Payet rather than risk going with a more obscure replacement.
It remains to be seen as to whether Payet indeed moves on this season, as after providing 17 assists and 15 goals for the Hammers last year coupled with his exploits at Euro 2016, he undoubtedly attracted the attention of the top clubs around Europe.
After making a disappointing start to this season, West Ham boss Slaven Bilic will know that they have to do better to keep their best players, but The Sun believe that a contingency plan is in place in the event that Payet decides the time has come to move on.
