West Ham United ace Dimitri Payet failed to rule out a January exit from the club this week, and it’s time that the top Premier League clubs took notice.
“We’ve had a very poor start to the season,” he told French television programme Téléfoot, as noted by The Guardian. “Will I go in January? I’m asking other questions right now but I’ve closed the door to nothing.”
The French international went on to dismiss talk of a move to Paris Saint-Germain or Marseille as he hasn’t been approached by them as of yet, and so the door is very much open to a move to a bigger Premier League outfit.
Clubs in Italy and Spain will also be alerted by his comments and there are plenty of arguments that he would be well suited to those leagues too.
Nevertheless, at 29 years of age, Payet has a big decision to make on his next move if West Ham are unable to offer the progress that he is craving, and it has to be to one of the top clubs in England having now had a taste for the Premier League and flourished.
The former Marseille man had 17 assists and 15 goals in 44 appearances in all competitions last season, and continued his fine form at Euro 2016 this past summer as helped inspire Les Bleus to the final of the tournament as hosts.
Having proven his ability to deliver on the big stage, he is more than deserving of a move to the likes of an Arsenal or a Chelsea, albeit that many of the other top clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester United could now struggle to find space for him if they were interested.
Slaven Bilic will have to work hard to persuade his star man that his future lies at the London Stadium and that the Hammers can offer him European football moving forward.
However, will it come quick enough and are those assurances solid? Many will doubt that they are and so it’s time that Payet had an opportunity to showcase his talents for a title contender and in Europe on a regular basis before the chance passes him by.
Loyalty is a rare yet wonderful thing in football and West Ham fans will hope that their French magician sticks it out. It’s becoming more and more difficult and frustrating for those outside of the club to essentially see him wasting his time though.
