Former Arsenal and Manchester United star striker Robin van Persie suffered a facial injury during Fenerbahce’s clash with Akhisar Belediyespor in the Turkish Super league on Sunday evening.

Van Persie suffered a gruesome eye injury which left onlookers worried about his future health. With blood pouring down his face the 33-year-old was immediately stretchered off the field and taken to hospital.

However, the experienced striker has taken to social media to calm the fears of worried fans.

Initial fears were that Van Persie may have suffered serious damage to his eye, but they were quickly quashed by reports from Fenerbahce which stated that the experienced striker had a torn eyelid but had suffered no damage to the eye itself.

“Van Persie received a blow to his eye, it was torn and bleeding,” Fenerbahce team doctor John Kunduracioglu, told Fanatik.

“After investigating, we sent him to an ophthalmologist at the hospital for further checks. We learned that nothing serious has happened, so the situation is good.”

Van Persie scored his sides opening goal during their 3-1 win over Akhisar on Sunday.
