Controversial midfielder Joey Barton is in talks with Rangers over terminating his contract, report the Express.

The Express report that Barton is in negotiations with the Scottish side over a severance package and that his departure could be announced as early as Wednesday.

The tabloid note that Barton has been involved in several controversies during his short spell with Rangers. It is reported that he was involved in a training ground row last month and was subsequently suspended the club. The following week he was with breaching Scottish Football Association’s regulations on betting.

He has not played a minute for Rangers since, and if the Express are to be believed he may never play for them again.

Barton began his professional career at Manchester City, where he made 153 appearances scoring 17 goals. He went on to play for Newcastle, QPR, Marseille and Burnley before signing a two-year deal with Rangers in the summer. Who knows what the future holds for the 34-year-old.
