Liverpool top transfer target to be offered new contract in bid to fend off Klopp interest

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc has revealed that the club will offer highly-talented youngster Christian Pulisic a new contract.

The move is in response to interest from rival clubs last summer, and Zorc doesn’t expect the interest to disappear any time soon so the Bundesliga giants will look to ensure that the USA international commits his long-term future to the club.

Speaking to Sports Illustrated, Zorc noted that the 18-year-old currently has a contract until 2019, but they’ll be looking to extend that while the common practice around Europe in modern day football is also to include a significant release clause to make life difficult for interested parties.

“There have been some offers for him in the summer window from England and from German clubs, but we would like to have him here and develop him here.

“We didn’t educate him to sell him. We have a long-running contract until 2019, but because of his development the club is ready to speak to him to prolong his contract at any time.”

As noted by The Mirror last week, Jurgen Klopp has been linked with a raid on his former club for the talented teenager in January, as they look to deal with the loss of Danny Ings to injury while Sadio Mane will be absent for a key period due to the African Cup of Nations.

However, it doesn’t appear as though he’ll have much success with an enquiry for Pulisic, as Dortmund’s intention is pretty clear in that they wish to keep him at the club for as long as possible and not view him as a means of making a healthy profit on a player that they’ve played a key role in developing.

A new contract will go a long way in protecting their position and showing their faith in the youngster, but it remains to be seen whether or not a move to Liverpool is too appealing to turn down.
