Sunday Supplement panelists Matt Dunn and Oliver Kay have insisted that Harry Kane is right to demand more money but don’t expect reported problems in negotiations to be a massive issue.
The England international has four-and-a-half years left on his current deal, but talks over a new deal have been put on hold until the end of the season after a disagreement over how much it would be worth, as noted by The Sun.
Both sides will evidently want to resolve the issue and secure a long-term agreement that both parties are happy with, and Dunn of The Daily Express believes it will work against Kane too as ultimately having come through the ranks at Spurs he’ll want to continue to lead the club forward.
“It’s a difficult negotiation because underlying is the knowledge on all sides that he’s one their own. He’s not going anywhere,” he said, as noted by Sky Sports.
“He deserves more money, of course he does, but (Daniel) Levy’s just got to offer him enough to feel good about himself within the structure of the club.
“The only thing he’s got is to be a bit awkward in the hope you get a few extra thousand pounds a week from Levy as a result.”
Kay was in agreement and believes that Kane deserves a hike in wages, but he’ll have to be sensible and realistic about it as ultimately Spurs won’t offer him as much as he could get elsewhere.
“I don’t want to say this guy should be getting £100,000 plus a week because it sounds ridiculous but should he be one of the top 20 earners in the Premier League? Undoubtedly.
“You wouldn’t expect Tottenham and Daniel Levy to pay on the same level that Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea pay.”
In turn, it will come down to the desire of Kane and whether or not he’s willing to earn less at White Hart Lane compared to what interested parties might be able to offer.
AC Milan are the latest club to be linked with a move for the prolific striker, but there is still a confidence that Kane will be with Tottenham for many years to come having quickly established himself as a club hero and a pivotal part of their plans for future success.
