Jurgen Klopp may have found a Philippe Coutinho replacement in a totally different player

Dicock Origi, tall and willowy, could not be more physically different to Philippe Coutinho. His playing style is very different too. But with the Brazilian out for an extended period, it may well be the Belgian striker who has to fill in.

Origi scored the crucial goal in Liverpool’s win over Leeds in the EFL cup on Tuesday night, marking his second in two games and firmly entrenching him as favourite to replace the Coutinho in Jurgen Klopp’s first team.

The Belgian striker got ahead of his man at the near post and tucked the ball away after an excellent cross, showing an eye for goal that he has lacked at times. Minutes later, he wriggled through a tiring Leeds back four as part of the move that lead to the Reds’ second.

Even more importantly for Origi he managed to complete the 90 minutes, despite a late injury scare, to get him up to speed for a start in the Premier League this weekend.

Origi has shown his ability in flashes at Anfield, but has never been able to hold onto a full time starting spot. With Coutinho likely out at least till Christmas, he finally has his chance. On the evidence of his last two appearances, he’s more than ready to take it.
