Barcelona and Real Madrid superstars joined by La Liga rival in battle for prestigious FIFA award

Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Antoine Griezmann have been named as the final three nominees for the Best FIFA Men’s Player Award 2016 as Barcelona and the Madrid clubs do battle again.

What was a 23-man list has now been whittled down to the final three, and the trio left standing will come as no surprise to most given the year that they’ve all had.

Votes are cast by captains and coaches of national teams, select members of the media and fans voting on FIFA.com, and in truth it doesn’t really come as much of a shock that any other individual was able to displace this star trident.

Ronaldo claimed his third Champions League title earlier this year before leading Portugal to triumph at Euro 2016 in France in the summer while the individual accolades continued to roll in.

Elsewhere, it wasn’t a bad calendar year for Griezmann either as the French international was a leading figure for both club and country despite falling agonisingly short on both occasions in the competitions mentioned above against Ronaldo.

And it’s merely expected from Messi that he continues to score incredible goals and delight the Barcelona faithful as he added another La Liga title to his collection as he competed the domestic double.

Although he was left disappointed yet again on the international stage after defeat in the Copa America final, it doesn’t take away from what was another impressive 12 months for the Argentine as he will now hope to beat off his La Liga rivals to the FIFA award.
