Barcelona striker who scored 59 goals in 53 goals last season close to signing contract extension according to the club’s president

Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu has revealed that Luis Suarez is set to sign a new contract with the club, report The Sun.

The Sun cite Uruguayan radio show Radio Visión y Cadena Celeste, who quote Bartomeu as revealing: “We will renew with Suarez, there are only a few small details left.”

Suarez scored 59 goals in 53 goals last campaign, a record that has put the 29-year-old on a pedestal alongside footballing titans Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. It comes as no surprise that Bartomeu is keen on tying Suarez down to a long-term deal: “The plan is to extend it for the maximum amount of time, up to 2022 to coincide with the Qatar World Cup.”

Barcelona have work to do if they are to retain their La Liga title this campaign. Luis Enrique’s side currently sit six points behind Real Madrid after the El Clasico stalemate.

On a personal level, Suarez is lagging behind his usual standard, but that has not stopped him from firing in the goals. The former Liverpool man has bagged 12 in his opening 19 games so far this campaign, and we imagine that there will be plenty more to come.
