Liverpool and Tottenham set for £33.5m transfer battle over former Premier League striker

Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly set to battle it out over the signing of Bayer Leverkusen striker Javier Hernandez.

Both Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino are said to be keen on bolstering their attacking options in January, and that has led them to consider the former Manchester United star.

According to The Mirror, the Mexican international has a £33.5m buyout clause in his contract with the Bundesliga outfit, and so either club will have to splash out significant money to make the move happen.

Nevertheless, it depends on how much they value the goalscoring threat that Hernandez brings as the 28-year-old is a consistent source of goals, as proven when given a chance at Old Trafford and following his move to Germany.

‘Chicharito’ scored 26 goals in 43 appearances in all competitions last season, and has seven in 20 so far this year, and he’ll certainly be a boost for either Spurs or Liverpool while it’s also claimed La Liga strugglers Valencia are interested.

Tottenham in particular have had their troubles that they need to address as summer signing Vincent Janssen hasn’t had the impact hoped for with an over-reliance on Harry Kane to score goals still there.

As for Liverpool, Klopp could do with an out-and-out striker at his disposal, particularly with Daniel Sturridge continuing to struggle with injuries.

As a result, Hernandez seems like a sensible move for either, while Leverkusen will be in line to make a healthy profit after spending £7.3m last summer to sign him from United, as per the report.
