Chelsea will let star defender go to Shanghai for free

Chelsea captain John Terry has been linked with a move to China once again, this time to Shanghai Shenhua.

The focus of the story in the Sun this time round is the size of the deal Terry will apparently be offered £12m after tax according to the paper.

Part of the logic of these sums reveals an interesting claim – that Chelsea would apparently waive any transfer fee for their captain should he move this month.

That wouldn’t be entirely surprising – the defender has only 6 months left before his contract expires and he would be able to move for free anyway – and it would be a minor gesture of good will to their long-serving captain to not ask for a transfer fee. But given the wealth of the club looking to buy the Englishman, it would seem strange if the Stamford Bridge side didn’t look to milk whatever fee they can from the buying club. They can certainly afford it.
